Back in November, were thrilled and surprised to win the Environment Champion Award at the Sutton Community Awards 2024.
Our secretary Isobel and volunteers Sandra, Spike and Laila attended the awards ceremony and had a great time learning about all the amazing Sutton volunteers. Our win was truly unexpected and a reflection on all we’ve achieved together since we restarted in 2022.
A year of conservation, wildlife and community
Last year we were really proud to take part in woodland management, species mapping and work with National Trust Rangers to clear the invasive floating pennywort from our local nature reserve Watermeads.
We also welcomed hundreds of people to the park to meet owls, paint landscapes, detect bats and take part in our monthly litter picks and events.
We spotted our first marsh orchid and had sightings of hobbies and buzzards over the park. This award recognises the impact of our group in the community and inspires us to keep going and achieve even more for our green spaces this year.
Unexpected win
The other nominees in the category were the amazing Zero Waste Sutton and the Sutton Repair Cafe who both do excellent work stopping rubbish getting into our environment.
We really didn’t expect to win with such stiff competition. Big shout out to all the winners in other categories and across the borough. Thanks so much to Sutton Council and Sutton parks for all your support. And to comedian Tim Vine, we do, sincerely, hope you join us for a park bulb planting or litter picking event soon!
Huge love to all who voted for our group! And to our members for keeping us going, joining in the hard graft and providing good chats along the way.
